Overview
Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) is on the list of China’s Double First-class universities and disciplines as well as Jiangsu high level universities. NUIST has over 30,000 undergraduates and more than 1,600 full-time teachers. The university has distinct characteristics. The discipline of Atmospheric Sciences has twice won the first place in the discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education of China. Meteorology is a national key discipline. Eight disciplines, such as Meteorological Equipment, Environmental Engineering and Communication Engineering, were awarded the project of construction of superior disciplines in Jiangsu universities; Geosciences, Engineering Science and Computer Science are among the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world. NUIST currently has 6 doctoral programs. Besides, there are 22 master programs and 13 professional master programs.
The School of Artificial Intelligence was established in June 2019, which was formed by integrating and optimizing the information engineering major from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering and adding a new undergraduate major in artificial intelligence. It is one of the key characteristic schools constructed by the university. The history of the school can be traced back to the information engineering major established by the Department of Computer and Information Engineering of the former Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in 1997. In June 2021, the School of Future Technology (a secondary teaching unit) was established, which is co-located with the School of Artificial Intelligence。
The school boasts of a strong and experienced faculty of 89 members, of whom,17 are professors and 25 are associate professors. 98.8% of them hold doctoral degrees, and most of them graduated from top universities in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Their research fields are cutting-edge and they have a good international perspective. The teaching staff includes 3 A-level experts from the National Major Talent Project, 2 national outstanding young talents, 2 talents from the Ministry of Education's talent support program, 1 lecturer from the Ministry of Education, 1 young scholar from the Ministry of Education, 2 talents from the National Overseas High level Talent Program, 3 IEEE Fellows, 1 outstanding young talent from Jiangsu Province, and 1 chief scientist from the National Key R&D Program; One person has won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and one person has won the second prize of National Natural Science Award; 7 highly cited scholars; More than 30 provincial and ministerial level talents, including Jiangsu Provincial Distinguished Professor, Zhejiang Provincial Distinguished Professor, and Jiangsu Provincial "333 Project" training objects.
We have three undergraduate majors in artificial intelligence, information engineering, and medical information engineering, as well as two characteristic teaching classes: the industrial top-notch class in the artificial intelligence and the dual bachelor's degree class of "Artificial Intelligence+Atmospheric Science". It has doctoral and master's degree authorization points for the second level discipline of "artificial intelligence" and master's degree authorization points for the "electronic information" (artificial intelligence direction) major, forming a complete talent training system covering undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees. Among them, the Artificial Intelligence major is one of the first 35 undergraduate majors approved by the Ministry of Education in 2019. The Artificial Intelligence discipline is a key discipline in Jiangsu Province during the 14th Five Year Plan period, and the Information Engineering major is a first-class undergraduate major in Jiangsu Province. The Industrial School of Artificial Intelligence is one of the first 50 national modern industry colleges under the Ministry of Education in China. In June 2020, it was approved as one of the first key construction industry colleges in Jiangsu Province. The college aims to develop a new track in the digital economy, condensing four characteristic disciplines including smart meteorology, smart healthcare and big data, metaverse and smart education, and artificial intelligence. It has also established four physical research teams and institutes: Smart Meteorology Research Institute, Smart Healthcare Research Institute, Metaverse Research Institute, and Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. The Smart Healthcare Research Institute is a discipline platform jointly established by our university and Zhongda Hospital, with distinct characteristics of medical engineering intersection.
We have artificial intelligence basic laboratory, artificial intelligence application laboratory, and artificial intelligence innovation and entrepreneurship studio, with a total area of more than 220 square meters and assets of more than 6 million yuan. In 2023, the college was approved as two provincial-level scientific research platforms, Jiangsu Metaverse Engineering Research Center and Digital Human Engineering Technology Research Center; Jointly initiated the establishment of the China Metaverse Technology and Application Innovation Platform with Zhejiang University and other institutions, and led the establishment of the Metaverse Intelligent Wearable Research Institute at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (Kunshan). Relying on industry benchmarks and high-quality strategic cooperative enterprises, we will carry out the "Artificial Intelligence+" action, actively promote the signing of strategic cooperation agreements with three top hospitals in Jiangsu Province, namely Southeast University Affiliated Zhongda Hospital, Nanjing Gulou Hospital, and Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, to jointly cultivate innovative talents in medical engineering; It has built a cloud service course platform (Alibaba Cloud) for AI related majors, a edge computing experimental platform (Hikvision), an Internet of Vehicles experimental platform (Neusoft), and an AI innovation platform (Turing) for cross disciplinary services across the university.
