OVERVIEW

The School of Artificial Intelligence at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology was established in June 2019, formed by integrating and optimizing the information engineering major from the School of Electronics and Information Engineering and adding a new undergraduate major in artificial intelligence. It is one of the key featured colleges constructed by the university. The history of the college can be traced back to the information engineering major established in 1997 by the Department of Computer and Information Engineering of the former Nanjing Institute of Meteorology. In June 2021, the School of Future Technology (a secondary teaching unit) was established and co-located with the School of Artificial Intelligence. In June 2024, the School of Future Technology began independent operation.

The School boasts a strong faculty team, with over 95 full-time teachers, including 12 with senior titles and 18 with associate senior titles. All of them hold doctoral degrees, and most of them graduated from top universities in China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. They are engaged in cutting-edge research fields and possess a good international perspective. The faculty team includes 3 experts of Class A of the National Major Talent Project, 2 National Outstanding Young Scholars, 2 talents supported by the Ministry of Education, 1 chair professor of the Ministry of Education, 1 young scholar of the Ministry of Education, 2 talents of the National Overseas High-level Talent Plan, 3 IEEE Fellows, 1 Jiangsu Provincial Outstanding Young Scholar, 1 chief scientist of the National Key R&D Program, 1 recipient of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize), 1 recipient of the National Natural Science Award (Second Prize), 7 highly cited scholars, and over 30 provincial and ministerial-level talents such as distinguished professors in Jiangsu Province, distinguished professors in Zhejiang Province, and candidates for Jiangsu Province's "333 Project".

The School offers four undergraduate majors: artificial intelligence, information engineering, medical information engineering, and big data and data science. Additionally, it hosts two distinctive teaching classes: the top-notch class for the artificial intelligence industry and the dual bachelor's degree class for "artificial intelligence + atmospheric science". The college boasts doctoral and master's degree authorization points for the secondary discipline of "artificial intelligence", as well as master's degree authorization points for the "electronic information" (artificial intelligence direction) and "electronic information" (biomedical engineering direction) majors. This forms a complete talent training system covering undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. Among them, the artificial intelligence major is one of the first 35 artificial intelligence undergraduate majors approved by the Ministry of Education in 2019. The artificial intelligence discipline is a key discipline in Jiangsu Province during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, and the information engineering major is a first-class undergraduate major in Jiangsu Province. The Artificial Intelligence Industry College is one of the first 50 national modern industry colleges approved by the Ministry of Education in China. In June 2020, it was approved as one of the first key construction industry colleges in Jiangsu Province. The college aims at the new track of digital economy development, focusing on 5 characteristic disciplinary development directions: smart meteorology, smart healthcare and big data, metaverse and smart education, artificial intelligence, and big data. 6 entity research teams and research institutes have been established: Smart Meteorology Research Institute, Smart Healthcare Research Institute, Metaverse Research Institute, Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, Data Science and Intelligent Equipment Research Center, and Big Data Technology and Perception Intelligence Center. Among them, the Smart Healthcare Research Institute is a disciplinary platform jointly established by our university and Zhongda Hospital, featuring a clear intersection of medical and engineering disciplines.

The School currently has 1,680 undergraduate students and 179 full-time graduate students. In the past three years, the further education rate of undergraduate graduates has reached 36%, and the high-quality employment rate has been over 98%. Specifically, in 2024, the postgraduate entrance examination rate was 41.67%, the further education rate was 46.11%, and the further education rate of Class 1, Grade 20 Artificial Intelligence was 72.92%. The college firmly establishes the cultivation of morality and talents as its central task, vigorously focuses on the quality of talent training for both undergraduates and graduate students, and lays the foundation of knowledge and ability for cultivating first-class engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs in the field of artificial intelligence. The students trained by the college closely meet the needs of socio-economic development and technological innovation in industries and enterprises, with high comprehensive quality, strong innovation ability, and strong service awareness, which are highly welcomed by society, industries, and enterprises. The talent training has been widely praised by employers.

The School boasts an artificial intelligence basic laboratory, an artificial intelligence application laboratory, and an artificial intelligence innovation and entrepreneurship studio, covering a total area of over 220 square meters and possessing assets exceeding 6 million yuan. In 2023, the college was approved as 3 provincial-level scientific research platforms: Jiangsu Province's Metaverse Engineering Research Center, Jiangsu Province's Cultural and Tourism Key Laboratory for Metaverse Cultural Tourism Scenario Application Technology Research, and Jiangsu Province's Provincial Key Laboratory for Intelligent Medical Image Computing in Universities. In collaboration with Zhejiang University and other institutions, it co-founded the China Metaverse Technology and Application Innovation Platform and spearheaded the establishment of the Metaverse Intelligent Wear Research Institute (Kunshan) at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. Relying on industry benchmarks and high-quality strategic cooperative enterprises, it carries out the "Artificial Intelligence+" initiative, actively promoting the signing of strategic cooperation agreements with three top hospitals in Jiangsu Province: Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, and Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital, to jointly cultivate innovative talents in medical engineering; it has built a cloud service course platform (Alibaba Cloud) for artificial intelligence-related majors, an edge computing experimental platform (Hikvision), a vehicle networking experimental platform (Neusoft), and an artificial intelligence innovation platform (Turing) serving interdisciplinary services across the entire university.

Guided by a steadfast commitment to socialist educational principles, the School of Artificial Intelligence and the School of Future Technology will steadfastly uphold their original mission of educating individuals for the Party and nurturing talents for the nation. We will always prioritize moral education as the cornerstone of our institutions, striving for steady progress and long-term success in our journey towards building a first-class and distinctive new engineering college. We will further strengthen the construction of our talent cultivation system, enhance the management of the entire talent cultivation process, improve the achievement of curriculum teaching goals, implement the moral education and talent cultivation prioritization project, and focus on creating a distinctive "three-pronged education" and "five-pronged education" work matrix for our colleges, aiming to cultivate new generations who are capable of shouldering the great responsibility of national rejuvenation.
